SHINEY’S “MICROMAX BAI” INVITES MACRO TROUBLE!

How much is too much and how far is going too far in needling the status quo regarding what is right and wrong in the world of advertising? Engaged in the business of educating, informing, persuading and selling goods and services in an interesting and consumer-friendly manner, are some players “crossing the line” in their anxiety to attract attention of the wrong kind? Should “creative licence” be milked dry in a manner that encroaches and invades personal space and disturbs reputation, tantamount to mocking, ridiculing, and even indulging in character assassination?

The facts. Micromax Mobile has come out with a TVC – Micromax Bai – which shows two young girls discovering how the first girl’s boyfriend bought both of them new Micromax phones. The situation takes a flip when they discover that he has gifted a new Micromax phone to the Bai (the housemaid) as well – all to increase his chances of winning a Hayabusa motorbike, a special Diwali offering by Micromax! In the real world, screaming headlines of “Shiney doesn’t buy the ad” greeted the Lowe-created TVC followed by the tainted actor serving the mobile company with a legal notice. Shiney is clearly not amused at his name being used, nor at the sly dig involving a housemaid. [For late entrants, the actor was sentenced to seven years in jail for allegedly raping his maid, and later, released on bail. The maid has already retracted her accusatory statement]

While the agency chose to remain silent, viewers are categorically vocal! Noted ad guru and Chief Consultant of Planman Marcom Alyque Padamsee is first off the blocks, doing a thumbs-down for the ad created by his old agency. “Freedom of speech, expression and thought is fine and totally acceptable but not when it indulges in maligning well-known personalities. That’s poor form!” Padamsee tells 4Ps B&M. Even the acclaimed and flamboyant champion of irreverence ad film-maker Prahlad Kakkar seems to do a freeze-frame when he says, “Smut is cool but never at the expense of housekeepers, women or public figures going through a downer.” He may have a point there.

But petite, Santiniketan-trained and Paris-based graphic designer Piya Sen takes a categorically opposite view and appears totally zapped. “Indian society continues to be paranoid and has this huge problem of being conveniently sanctimonious, and forever taking everything too seriously! Come on, it’s just a light-hearted aside on an issue that’s dead and buried. The man is out and living with his family. Why so desperately touchy? This hoo-haa has revived interest and attention of the public and on cue, a dumbed-down media has played it up big time to convert it to a headliner. I suspect no one would have connected it with the Bai controversy had not the actor got all heated up and taken legal action. I think in the year 2011, one has to be a little more chilled out about these things. Coming from this great financial super-power in the making, it’s really weird!” she says.

Youngistaan too chips in, hot n’ heavy. Young assistant film director Sneha Shreyasi completely vetoes the ad’s approach. She insists that this is “not done because, firstly, these are watched with family and this kind of nudge-wink jhatkas are in bad taste. Secondly, the adwallahs must think of Shiney’s family members and their feelings before they create such ads!”

He received the “Marketing Professional of the Year” award at the 2011 CMO Asia Awards ceremony in Singapore. And now, he enters the 4Ps B&M Hall of Fame 2011 with full honours

After his MBA in Marketing from IISWBM, Kolkata, Abhra Banerjee started his career with O&M, which he joined in April 1995. Two years later, he switched to ICI Paints, where he spent 10 years, rising from being a sales manager to Channel Marketing Controller, handling the company’s entire South East Asia affairs. Today, he spearheads Century Plyboards (I) Ltd. as its Executive Business Head. His goal, as he shared with anirudh raheja of 4PsB&M, is to make brand CenturyPly a billion dollar brand over the next two to three years.

Innovation has often been cited as the reason that CenturyPly has progressed. What do you innovate?
CenturyPly is a respected brand today, only because it offers innovation along with great quality of products and designs. It is arguably the most innovative wood panel industry brand in the country. Some of the innovations which are worth mentioning are GLP (Glue Line Protection) which kills borers and termites from within. This is an innovation, which the market has not yet been able to replicate. The company has also employed a battery of designers who bring out the latest design trends to India in Laminates and Veneers, faster than our competitors do.

Talking about innovation, you seem to have acquired the best manufacturing technologies available in your line of business...
We have achieved this due to our strong partnerships and linkages with manufacturing companies from whom we have acquired the technical know-how. Our senior management team comprising representatives from technical, production and marketing fields, attend all the major wood exhibitions of the world and are constantly on the look-out for the latest winning technologies. So we always keep our eyes open and make the quick, first move to stay ahead each time.

You deal with a natural resource, which is also a raw material for your business – wood. Does this very fact pose any challenge to CenturyPly?
Yes. We need to constantly look out for newer sources of raw materials. Wood is a scarce commodity and we are always on the lookout for newer avenues to source the same.

In July this year, you were felicitated with the ‘CMO Asia Award’ in the category of ‘Marketing Professional of the Year’ for ‘Excellence in Branding & Marketing’. What do you do to ensure that each employee at CenturyPly in the marketing and sales functions lives up to your high standards?
Every business exists for its consumers. The consumers agree to part with their hard-earned money by paying for the goods or services rendered by a business. Hence the company comes into existence. The marketing team of each company therefore helps to identify the proverbial ‘need-gaps’ within the target consumer segment, which the business unit can strive to fulfil and hence continue in its line of business. In our organisation, this ‘Marketing Focus’ or in other words, this ‘Consumer Focus’ is drilled into every member of the sales and marketing team and they are trained to listen to the ‘voice of the consumer’. This voice is then echoed across the length and breadth of the organisation so that the entire business evolves into a consumer-focused business unit.

Can Foursquare Actually Work for Marketers?

It’s Hip, It’s Happening, It’s Hot – it’s an Application that has Been Named by World Economic forum as Being The Tech Pioneer of 2011.

Imagine running a restaurant; and noticing a bevy of girls entering your outlet. Now imagine that you’re able to send a message immediately to all those girls that provides them a unique promotional scheme specially packaged to their demographic profile. That’s more or less foursquare (with a small ‘f’) for you, an application that can ensure that if your prospective customers are signed up with the application, they become privy to all such unique discounts purely based on their target profile. Created by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai in 2009, foursquare’s unique proposition has been that it combines geographic data (latitude, longitude) of the consumer with the demographic data to provide a marketer most unique insights into the consumer’s purchase behaviour. But foursquare goes beyond, and in fact motivates the consumer through various schemes, badges, reward points et al to ‘indulge’ in purchase behaviour. Has it been successful? Well, with seven million users already (March 2011 data) and with the World Economic Forum announcing foursquare the Technology Pioneer of 2011, all eyes are set on this radical application.

With mainstream social web gravitating more towards mobile Internet devices, the emerging space of mobile-based social networks is empowering customers to find the best venues and prices for their products while offering savvy companies unique ways to cater to this new medium. Since more consumers are using the mobile social web, marketers are able create incentives and contests to drive customers to their business while brands look to connect with consumers within their stores. Naturally, brands are using different types of location-based services and applications such as Foursquare to not only tie their message to a real-world location and provide value for the user but also to get the word out about new products or to reward loyal consumers.

In our ever increasing hyper sharing of status updates society, foursquare has been widely acknowledged to be the breakout hit of 2010. Foursquare, on the back of its hot mobile social media platform, acts as a friend-finder, a social city-guide and a game that rewards you for doing interesting things besides allowing marketers to, as mentioned before, hyper-target their message to consumers at the precise moment they’re in proximity of business establishments. Truly, given the reach and the ability to target a user based on location allows marketers to deliver a message in a way that they haven’t in the past. Any business that wants to connect with a local audience can benefit from location-based services. Many research studies indicate that for impulse purchases, like food and clothing, there is a particularly strong opportunity to point a consumer to a nearby deal and see them take action. For longer purchase consideration cycle products, tying messaging to a location can serve as a strong reminder from the brand in the buying process.

More and more companies are hopping on the foursquare location-based services bandwagon as this tool apparently helps drive customer traffic and sales to businesses better than competing platforms – foursquare got the “Best Location Based Service Award” in the TechCrunch Crunchies 2010 event. About a year ago, in the USA, McDonald’s launched a promotional campaign built around a consumer-generated foursquare day. It raffled 100 $5 and $10 gift cards to foursquare users who checked in at a McDonald’s store location. Similarly, Saks Fifth Avenue and InStyle now regularly offer several foursquare promotions throughout the year where customers can “check-in” to certain departments to get a prize such as lip gloss or gloves. Foursquare users “check-in” to places using their smartphones. Check-ins earn users points and the more you check-in the more you’re rewarded with social currency in the form of various badges — and you can share your “virtual acquisitions” automatically on Twitter and Facebook. The person who visits a location the most becomes “Mayor” of that place, until someone else comes along and wins the title. And foursquare promotions are not limited to food and drinks alone. Higher-end fashion chains like Diesel and Marc Jacobs have also launched foursquare campaigns, as have media outlets like NBC, the New York Times and The History Channel.

1 . Tata Sky
Baseline: Isko laga dala toh cricket jhingalala
Agency: Ogilvy India

Description: The TVC opens on the cricket field where an extremely uninterested umpire is yawning when a bowler appeals for LBW. Instead of declaring the outcome, this umpire makes a call and asks ‘Babloo’ whether the batsman is out or not and then confirms in the affirmative because ‘Babloo’ said that the player is out. The frame then shifts to ’Babloo’ who’s watching cricket on Tata Sky. VO: Babloo cricket dekhta hai Tata Sky HD par. High definition clarity ke saath.

4Ps Take: As the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 takes centre-stage, Tata Sky is all geared to promote the HD experience of watching cricket big time. The company known for its ads crafted around a humorous theme has once hit the target bang on when it comes to clarity in terms of communication. Perfect timing to make the viewers get a heck of HD is how we look at it.

2. TVS Wego
Baseline: The new TVS Wego has body balance
Agency: BBH, India

Description: The TVC kicks off with two couples riding the TVS Wego scooters. The pillion riders (read ladies) in an attempt to compete, start by showing off their balancing skills and end up performing some awe-striking acrobatics. Just when the scooters stop at a traffic light, an old lady is shocked looking at their posture; her husband then tells her that it’s the new TVS Wego scooter with body balancing. VO: It’s true, the new TVS Wego has body balance.

4Ps Take: There are very few ads that score on communication as good as this one does. The USP (body balancing, which underlines the scooter’s handling capabilities) is highlighted really well. The creative succeeds in breaking away from monotony as every element has been supported with minute details. Great idea, smart execution, superb results!

The ‘Spirit’ual Teacher’s secret brand concoction

Steven Philip Warner learns some brand secrets from the Veteran who spearheads the marketing division of the fourth-largest spirits & wine-making company in the world

Seven years back, when Neeraj Kumar appeared for his first interview at Allied Domecq Spirits and Wine India (the previous avatar of Beam Global Spirits & Wine), the-then Regional Brand Director from Singapore, shot a question at him: “What according to you would be success, five years from now?” To this, he replied, “Currently my dad drinks a competition brand to your portfolio. If I can convert him to drinking your brands, I would consider myself reasonably successful.” Today, his father’s minibar has more Teacher’s scotch bottles than any other spirits brand, a product which accounts for 80% of the company’s revenues.

So how has the journey been so far for this formerly PepsiCo and Electrolux veteran, who is today the Director of Marketing at Beam Global? Kumar feels that every single day at work, during his 15 year-long career, has been very different. And why not? Selling Pepsi-cola in Nepal to the youth, catching attention of homemakers with Electrolux ACs and refrigerators in Singapore and grabbing eyeballs with wines and spirits in India call for different routines and game-plans for a marketer. “I think it all has to do with who your bull’s eye is. So while with Pepsi, it was all about the next generation, with Electrolux, the task was to involve the decision-maker and the mother of the house. When it comes to Beam Global, it was about activation programmes to get to the legal drinking age group,” says he. Even in terms of media usage, it has been quite a decathlon, for when you talk about FMCG or even white goods, you can very conveniently use above-the-line activities (ATL) to spread the word. But the law of the land disallows the same in the case of spirits. And this is where comes the biggest learning curve for Kumar at Beam Global. “It is all about how you move away from ATL approach and reach out to your target audience, by way of activation and below-the-line activities. From using media channels in my previous roles, to really going to that one person in a Hard Rock Cafe and telling him about a Jim Beam or a Teacher’s – this has been the biggest change and the best lesson for me here,” shares Kumar.

Currently, Beam Global is the fourth-largest wines and spirits company in the world and has more than ten brands in its portfolio, of which the flagship product undoubtedly, is Teacher’s scotch whisky. “Teacher’s accounts for 40% of all scotch whisky sales in the country,” claims Kumar. The other brands include Jim Bean (the #1 selling bourbon whiskey in the world), Courvoisier cognac (the leading cognac brand in the United Kingdom), Laphroaig (the highest selling single malt islay scotch whisky in the world), Sauza (the second-highest selling tequila in the world) and a few more. But despite having established many strong brands in the Indian market (which is also the most profitable one for its Teacher’s brand), Kumar still doesn’t want to loosen his strong hold on the channels of distribution which he considers extremely critical. “I think the channel is an integral part of brand-building. You can use it as an engagement tool and make your customers believe in your brand. Without a proper channel focus, brands have a weaker selling proposition.” Then there is also the difference in the required level of education and sophistication of channel types that come into the picture when it comes to spirits. For instance, when you talk about TVs and refrigerators, customers would very rarely make impulse purchase decisions and would visit at least 2-4 outlets before taking a final call. Therefore the education to be imparted, whether to the consumers or salesforce and distributors, is of a more evolved category. Also, the engagement for the company is more off-premise. But when it comes to spirits, it is more of an on-premise effort. And this is quite an exercise, as Kumar says, “On-premise is when you talk to a bartender or the catering staff to educate them about your product(s). We have a constant effort going on in this respect. And why is education and engagement required? The reason being that there is a particular way in which a margarita drink is prepared. With colas, the consumer simply makes a choice, but in spirits, despite the consumer having made a choice, it all depends on how the bartender prepares the concoction.” There is another difference. A product like Pepsi cola doesn’t demand a high level of engagement, for it is all about ensuring that the product is available chilled, anytime & anywhere. But with spirits, it is about getting the right temperature product, with the right mix and at the right place and time.

Sri Lanka detains 23 TN fishermen

Even as diplomatic talks between India and Sri Lanka were going on over Tamil Nadu's complaints of attacks on its fishermen, theLankan navy on Monday detained 23 fishermenfrom Rameswaram after they strayed into its territorial waters. The fishermen have been detained in a police station in Talaimannar in Sri Lanka's northwestern coast. Tension prevailed in Rameswaram when the fishermen did not return. Their colleagues, who had also put out to sea along with them but managed to get back, met officials of the state fisheries department and demanded that steps be taken for their immediate release. Hours after the news broke, chief minister J Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention to prevail upon the Lankan government to release the fishermen and their five boats. Jayalalithaa said the frequent arrests of fishermen by the Lankan navy created a lot of tension and unrest among fishermen in the state. She reminded Singh that last month when four fishermen whose boat had capsized were arrested and remanded in custody by Kayts Court in Sri Lanka she had written to him. In your June 15 letter you had informed me that the matter had been taken up with the Sri Lankan government, she said.

The incident comes barely two weeks after both national security adviser Shiv Shankar Menon and external affairs secretary Nirupama Rao met their counterparts in Sri Lanka to apprise them about the problems faced by Indian fishermen. Menon had met Jayalalithaa before he left for Colombo. In her letter, Jayalalithaa said Shivshankar Menon had met her on two occasions, once before leaving for Colombo and again during her meeting with the Prime Minister.

According to reports from Rameswaram, the fishermen put out to sea on Monday in about 620 mechanised boats. With fish catch sparse in the Indian waters, they headed for the Kachchativu island. On spotting the Lankan naval vessels, most of the fishermen turned back and escaped. But the 23 fishermen along with their five boats were nabbed.

Morgan Stanley cuts FY'12 India growth to 7.7 per cent

The next three to six months may not be very good for the Indian equities market, but it makes a very good investment proposition with a 12-18 months view, and India would continue to be on a high-growth path posting 7.7 per cent in 2011-12, said Morgan Stanley analysts. "There is a 19 per cent upside for the BSE Sensex considering our target of 22,100 points. And the market provides a great environment for the stock pickers, as the macro influence on stock prices has already peaked," said Ridham Desai, MD and head of Indian equity research team of Morgan Stanley.

"Valuations are looking attractive, especially on an absolute basis, and for the broader market, the market is pricing in slower near-term growth," he added. Morgan Stanley has shifted its focus from global commodities to domestic consumer-driven sectors. "We remain overweight on industrials and are cognizant of the downside to capital expansion," Desai added. Industrials include engineering, capital goods and infrastructure sectors.

Other favourites include energy, telecom and utilities, while sectors that are underweight are consumer staples, healthcare, financials and materials (commodities). Technology is in the neutral. "Risk-return analysis is in favour of small- and mid-cap stocks, compared to frontline stocks," Desai said. Global risks apart, the market performance would depend on the policy initiatives of the government in the coming quarters. Desai listed expected policy decisions as fuel price hikes, fertiliser prices, FDI in retail and coal mining policy.
"Higher interest rates are likely to put pressure on corporate profitability, but are unlikely to affect them much," said Desai, reasoning that the current debt levels of Indian companies was much lower compared to its own past. On the global front, the impact of withdrawal of quantitative easing (QE-II) in the US on commodity prices was identified as a major surprise in store. Consequent to the US launching the QE-II in September 2010, commodity prices shot up as the US dollar slid.

Responding to a query on the attractiveness of the Indian market for foreign institutional investors (FIIs), Desai said, "Foreign investors are cautious at present and are waiting to invest. But typically foreign inflows follow performance and not the other way round."

Chetan Ahya, MD and Asia Pacific economist at Morgan Stanley, said the government spending will nosedive this fiscal to seven to eight per cent of GDP from 18-19 per cent of CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) in the last five years.

Angela Merkel in India for joint cabinet meet

India and Germany will hold their first inter-governmental consultations at the cabinet-level when Chancellor Angela Merkel visits New Delhi Tuesday on an invitation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. India is the first Asian country and one of very few nations with which Germany holds a joint cabinet meeting and this is seen as a demonstration of its high esteem for India as a long-standing and reliable partner and as a recognition of the country's rapidly growing economic clout and technological prowess. The Indo-German inter-governmental consultations in New Delhi will be chaired jointly by Chancellor Merkel and Singh and it will be attended by five German cabinet ministers as well as senior officials from several ministries. Further expanding and intensifying the economic cooperation between the two countries will be high on the agenda of the meeting and the two sides are expected to explore ways to step up bilateral trade as well as to promote German investments in India and vice-versa. Discussions will also focus on new possibilities for cooperation in building up and modernising India's infrastructure, development of renewable and conventional energy sources and promotion of technical education and vocational training as well as new avenues for cooperation in the field of defence.

Economic Cooperation has been the main pillar of Indo-German relations and its continuing importance is evident from the fact that Ms Merkel is taking with her a high-ranking business delegation of 19 top managers of leading companies representing key industrial sectors such as civil and military aerospace, auto ancillaries, electrical industry, chemicals, machine tools, railway technology and technical services.

Germany is India's largest trading partner in the European Union and bilateral trade has been growing rapidly in recent years. The exchange of goods and services between the two countries went up by 17.8 per cent in 2010 and reached a record level of 15.44 billion euros.

However, the India's deficit in bilateral trade widened as it imported goods from Germany worth 9.25 billion euros, 14.32 per cent more than in 2009, compared to its exports to Germany worth 6.19 billion euros, 21.49 per cent up from the level of the previous year.

India's main imports from Germany include machinery, engineering goods, aircraft, precision equipment and control systems, metal products, chemicals and synthetic items.

Sensex, Nifty hit highest level in more than a week

The key benchmark indices hit their highest levels in more than a week as most Asian stocks rose. The market breadth was strong. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries edged higher. The BSE Sensex was up 63.14 points or 0.35%. ONGC, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Indian Oil Corporation, BPCL and National Aluminium Company rose ahead of their Q4 results due today. Reliance Communications (RCom) fell ahead of its Q4 results today. A bout of volatility was witnessed in early trade as the market pared gains after a firm start. The market soon regained strength.

At 09:25 IST, the BSE Sensex was up 63.14 points or 0.35% to 18,329.24. The Sensex jumped 114.07 points at the day's high of 18,380.17 in early trade, its highest level since 20 May 2011. The index rose 51.06 points at the day's low of 18,317.16 in early trade.
The S&P CNX Nifty was up 21.05 points or 0.39% to 5,497.60. The Nifty hit high of 5,509.30 in early trade, its highest level since 20 May 2011.

The market breadth, indicating the health of the market, was strong. On BSE, 483 shares advanced while 113 shares declined. A total of 13 shares remained unchanged.
Among the 30-member Sensex pack, 24 stocks rose while the rest of them fell.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) gained 0.39%, with the stock gaining for the third straight day.

India's largest oil & gas exploration firm by sales ONGC gained 0.55% ahead of its Q4 results today. India's largest tractor maker by sales Mahindra & Mahindra rose 0.87% ahead of its Q4 results today.

Shares of state-run oil marketing firm BPCL rose 0.86% ahead of its Q4 results today. Another oil marketing firm Indian Oil Corporation gained 0.26% ahead of its Q4 results today.

India's second largest mobile services provider by sales Reliance Communications fell 0.24% ahead of its Q4 results today. Public sector aluminum producer National Aluminum Company rose 1.98% ahead of its Q4 results today.

Reliance Infrastructure (R-Infra) rose 0.53% after the company announced after market hours on Friday that consolidated net profit rose 2% to Rs. 1552 crore on 4% rise in total operating income to Rs. 15408 crore in the year ended March 2011 over the year ended March 2010. The company said it remains debt free at the net level and enjoys top end ratings from CRISIL and Fitch.

The company said it is developing 11 road projects worth Rs. 12000 crore and three metro rail projects in Mumbai and Delhi worth about Rs. 16000 crore. The Delhi metro rail project has already become operational. The company said the order book of its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) division stood at Rs. 29635 crore as on 31 March 2011.
DLF gained 2.24% and was the top gainer from the Sensex pack. DLF, last week, said it is focusing on high margin residential projects. In the commercial leasing segment, the company's strategy is to increase average rentals and focus on leasing of semi-finished and ready-to-occupy properties. DLF also said it intends to strengthen operational cash flows and enhance momentum on non-core divestments. The company said it will moderate investments in land aggregation and capex. DLF said it has raised its overall target for asset divestments to Rs. 10000 crore from Rs. 4500 crore previously.

Coal Market Targets the growing Indian and Chinese markets

China will face stiff competition for coal shipped by Indonesia, the world's biggest exporter of thermal coal, from India where demand for electricity is rising in an economy seen growing around 8.5 percent.

"With domestic prices rising so strongly -- they are basically on par with import prices now -- the likelihood of China being strong importers of thermal coal over the summer is extremely high," said Daniel Hynes, director of commodity research at Citigroup in Sydney

Chinese domestic coal prices rose to the highest level in more than two years last week as utilities stocked up ahead of the summer months, making imports more attractive.

Chinese buyers have already been on the hunt for Indonesian cargoes as well as some Australian coal over the last few weeks to fill requirements.

Indian demand for Indonesian coal is also on the rise, and India's short-term and long-term demand is likely to be a focus. Growing demand for Indonesian coal by India, to fill the widening gap between domestic coal output and demand, is likely to continue, the analyst added, resulting in intense competition between India and China for tonnage. Indian and Chinese companies are also seeking to acquire stakes in Indonesian coal mines to secure their supply, with Coal India , the world's largest coal miner, in advanced talks to buy up to 40 percent of Indonesian low-grade coal producer Golden Energy Mines for up to $1 billion, three sources with direct knowledge of the deal said.

Although India is home to 10 percent of global coal reserves, it is plagued by a shortfall in local supplies as demand has grown rapidly with the increase in coal-fired power plants.

India's coal demand is forecast to grow 11 percent a year, reaching 135 million tonnes in 2011/12 with imports set to make up about 20 percent of its total consumption.

ANTICIPATION OF RECOVERY

The industry will also be closely watching Japanese demand for coal, which withered after the March tsunami took some coal-fired plants offline and forced some utilities to declare force majeure on coal shipments. Some Japan-bound cargoes have been diverted to destinations such as China.

INDONESIA MINING REGULATION

With demand for Indonesian coal ramping up, in particular from China and India, Indonesian coal production capacity and regulations will also be in the spotlight.

Indonesia's coal, generally lower-quality than the coal its neighbour Australia produces, is attractive to Asian buyers seeking bargains, and cheaper freight from Indonesia offers an advantage.

But the lack of infrastructure and some government regulations have depressed production.

"The overall consensus is that production is still under pressure," Singapore-based UBS analyst Andreas Bokkenheuser said.

Indonesia also struggles to deal with a raft of problems including illegal mining and overlapping mining concessions.

In its latest move to clean up the industry, Indonesia's government will audit some 8,000 new mining permits to make sure they are in line with mining and environmental laws.

"For the fifth or sixth year in a row, it's going to be about production, infrastructure and regulations," Bokkenheuser said.

"There will be talk about new land reform, increasing the investment environment in Indonesia -- that will be the primary focus."

Ex-IMF chief Strauss-Kahn moves to new housing

Dominique Strauss-Kahn moved into a new location in Manhattan where he will wait under house arrest for his New York trial on sex assault charges.

The former head of the International Monetary Fund left the lower Manhattan apartment where he first went after being freed on bail and entered a new residence in the trendy Tribeca neighbourhood.

Strauss-Kahn, who resigned as head of the IMF after being charged with the violent sexual assault of a hotel chambermaid, was granted a USD 6 million bail package that requires him to live under 24-hour armed guard and wear a monitoring device.

Initial efforts by his wealthy wife to put him in a luxury building in another part of Manhattan fell through after complaints from residents, forcing him to go to the lower Manhattan location owned by the security company managing his home detention.

Strauss-Kahn is next due in court on June 06.

How has the scenario changed since then?
Now we are heard and our voice is accepted. Consumers too are aware and demand a better product and a better technology.

But, the competition has also increased...
Yes indeed. But we need to keep innovating and upgrade our technology which we have been doing till now. In a consumer business, a consumer is not looking only at the product but at service as well.

You claim that your products are based on cosumer insights. What kind of research goes into it?
It’s not a methodological research that we follow, but it’s a research through our interaction with people in the field. Further, we have created a special marketing team in Delhi which remains in touch with consumers on a daily basis. It’s quite important as we need to know the pulse of market. Even for our channel partners based outside Delhi we do the review once in every six months.

How challenging is it to remain on top?
The business demands a great service network as such we need to be on our toes every second. Secondly, many fly by night operators enter into the market and spoil the business. They buy components from outside and develop it. Further, as our products are becoming popular, duplicate and fake products are dumped in the market in our name.

Your future plans...
I see myself as a market leader. I want to surpass Eureka Forbes as its turnover is bigger than ours. However, in the RO category we are still the leaders.

Despite the VAT rate increase, McDonalds released its new advertising campaign themed, “Affordability” for its Happy Price Menu with the central message, “You don’t need to think twice when McDonalds has burgers at only Rs. 25.” Earlier, the same burger was priced at Rs. 20. With the ad-drive, McDonald’s is hoping that the Young Adults No Kids (YANKS) group, which is seen contributing to 75% of McDonald’s footfalls, would not really mind the 25% increase in prices if the same is communicated appropriately. Given that McDonald’s has been ranked in July 2010 as the 12th best brand in the Asia Pacific region by one report, the presumption of McDonald’s holds weight, if not evidence, given that it caters to above of 2 lakh customers in India on a daily basis, by various estimates. In related news, in the United States, McDonald’s profits were up 12% and reached a promising $1.23bn. Apparently, McDonald’s is also in the process of streamlining its supply chain processes much better to ensure these profits rise further in the future.

Mercedes has proven to be that fast second-mover. But how does the company plan to market its latest offering to the Indian consumer? According to estimates, the size of the pre-owned car market in India is expected to be 10-15% of the new car market volume (sales figures for the first half of 2010). This figure is expected to rise substantially over the next couple of years, which makes the pre-owned car market critical for all luxury carmakers. So what marketing mode of mass communication are the second-hand car sellers banking upon. Says Debashis Mitra, Head – Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India to 4Ps B&M, “A large chunk of awareness will depend on the word-of-mouth advertising through the consumers in the pre-owned cars business.”

On the proactive front, the company plans to follow conventional advertising methods to promote its second-hand car arm in the Indian market, as it has been doing for its passenger car business so far. Talking about outreach, the company has rolled out its Proven Exclusivity program across four cities (Phase I) and plans to take the count to 12 locations by the end of 2010. Aulbur also says that Mercedes is expecting to generate around 10-15% of its topline via the used car route by 2011. Experts also opine that the second hand car business will guarantee greater footfall in Mercedes’ showrooms across the country.

There is a challenge that threatens to decelerate this dream run of the Mercs – the unorganised market. According to industry data, 90% of the resale auto market belongs to the unorganised segment, which covers not just the friendly neighborhood second hand car dealers but also the one-to-one ‘grey’ dealmakers. There is one hope though – thanks to the segment in which Mercedes operates, it is widely believed that the consumer will prefer the organised channel.

Even in other segments, competitors like Maruti True Value (Maruti’s preowned car reselling arm), have been showing growth rates between 25-50% month on month (data available till February 2010). At the same time, due to the fact that there is no dearth of top class service and support facilities for even the grey market purchases/imports, one would have to wait for the market figures to come in, before confirming Mercedes’ success. Sixteen years and 30,000 units sold in India – what does the future hold for Mercedes? Whatever it does, its long-earned glory in India will come in handy.

It’s a Fox’s Jump

FOX International Channels (FIC) which is a subsidiary of the FOX entertainment group has added 7 new channels to its portfolio in India. FIC which produces and distributes entertainment, sports and movie channels around the world is part of media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Out of the seven new channels that the company has announced to be launched in India, FOX Crime and FX are already available but only with DTH players like Tata Sky and Sun Direct; but will soon be available with other DTH players and cable distributors going by the announcements made by the company. These new channels are in the genre such as music, wildlife and crime and will give the Indian customer more options in the space. This will apparently bring change in the entertainment space because FOX is attempting to bring its international experience in play to capture more market share in the Indian market. FOX, for records, has 170 plus channels in its global portfolio and may bring a few more if these launches are successful.

NISSAN, WHY SO SERIOUS? NOT SO SERIOUS!

Roping in brand ambassadors for a larger awareness and acceptability of the product is a trend that does not have many takers in the Indian automobile sector. An SRK for i10, Aamir for Innova and Big B and Junior Bachchan for Versa are a case in point. However, Ranbir Kapoor has also recently made it to the list as he has been signed by Nissan Motors India for the next three years. In fact, while Micra was able to register only 600 bookings in the first six weeks, post Ranbir’s entry, the automaker got an additional 400 bookings within two weeks. But with only 11 dealerships all India, celebrity or no celebrity, sales will never thunder up. Apart from Micra, Ranbir will promote various other products of Nissan. Nissan has also done a handful of BTL activities to promote the upcoming Micra in the Indian market that were in a way, innovative – but only in a way. The company seems to be hunting for the consumer based on tried and tested concepts. “We always focus on addressing our customers with creative and unseen marketing activities. Moreover, we use our best brand ambassadors, our carlines with a clear benefit for the customers,” explained Lutz Kothe, Chief General Manager – Marketing & PR, Volkswagen Group Sales, India to 4Ps B&M. There is no denying that Nissan’s efforts have been able to work in favour of the company, but with consumer choices changing fast, Nissan needs to bring in creativity in its future campaigns. And of course, dealerships...

Tablet’s Big War

Mark Hurd (CEO, HP; above) is a worried man. And so is Michael Dell. And mostly because of Steve Jobs, whose iPad launch, for whatever reasons, has catapulted Apple into becoming the second most valuable company on the planet (after ExxonMobil). The bone of contention is the tablet PC market, with HP (about to launch Slate as their iPad answer) and Dell (about to launch Streak) ready to jump into the market in a big way. While HP has its distribution as a plus, Dell has its pricing strategy to beat Apple’s first mover advantage. But HP might score in another area – after their recent purchase of Palm, HP gets unrestricted access to use Palm OS on their tablet PCs, rather than the previously decided Windows 7. And then again, it could be neither HP nor Dell. Latest news is that not only is Jobs relaunching a ‘better’ version of the iPhone (a smaller iPad perhaps?), but even Nokia, Microsoft, Sony and Google are coming in the tablet PC market. jayant mundra

Is the “Star” factor blitzing our Adbiz too?

FCB Ulka’s Executive Director and CEO Arvind Wable, ends this debate with his typical objectivity. According to him, at the end of the day, it has to be about each agency’s individual style of presenting themselves – or wanting to be perceived. In other words, whether you have a Hollywood star in your camp works out whether you can use him or her. And if you don’t have a star, then you really have only teamwork to talk about. But the creativity has to be there, always. Advertising is a creative-driven calling and there will always be a temptation to identify, spotlight and celebrate Prima-Donna. It’s a natural human want and has only to do with profiling; if the profiling works for your organisation, then what’s the whole issue about it? What gives? On an objective, detached, dispassionate and coldly professional note, Personality Cult can indeed be a dangerous game to play. It suggests total dependence on your high-voltage, dazzling, high-profile, maverick star. Should he quit, fail to perform, or go off the media’s radar – it could be burial time! However, in a world that is bursting with politically-correct mediocrity, and boring ordinariness, these colourful, irreverent, flashy, frank and fearless, larger-than-life live wires provide that magical breath of fresh air along with excitement, surprise and delight.

Are we forgetting here? The American democracy has had one face to represent since it found its first President in George Washington in April 30, 1789. [How many times have you even bothered to find out who the first Vice-President was?] The practice of having one face to lead your organisation has been in practice for the past 220 years – enough time to testify that One organisation, one firm is never a bad idea. Similarly, in adland, considering you have hired hardworking and creative individuals, there is no harm in ensuring that one face gets your counter machine ticking. Anything wrong with that?!

The Resident Non-Indians!

While HSBC was the first one in India to give its customers the freedom to break the queue in front of the cash counters by opening ATMs, Citibank moved a step ahead by allowing its customers to go cashless by introducing the concept of credit cards in the country. Their offerings in terms of specialised products and services have allowed them to go hard on Indian banks with whatever small perimeter they are allowed to operate in. Farhan Faruqui, Head-Global Banking, Asia Pacific, Citibank, says, “Our global banking structure gives us a single, unified coverage force that can deliver to our clients the best ideas, innovations, products and services in the industry.” Certainly, it’s the synergy with their parents’ global presence that allows these foreign banks to stay ahead of domestic players in terms of introducing innovative concepts, but undoubtedly it’s their efficiency, which has helped them to occupy dominant positions in individual segments like cash management services, sub-custody, dollar clearing and advising for cross border transactions et al. However, the only other area, apart from expansion of their network (thanks to the regulators), where the foreign banks are lagging behind is perhaps in promoting themselves. There is no doubt that they have done wonders in the past whenever they have attempted to communicate their presence. Take Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) for example. At a time when people were losing confidence in it, the bank after roping in Sachin Tendulkar launched a campaign that said “Make it happen”. During that year 2008, the bank increased its ad-spend from zero to Rs.17.47 crores. As a result, today, consumers perceive it as one of the top 5 foreign banks. Even HSBC, with its “The World’s local bank” campaign, has managed to do tremendously well.

But then, the problem is that they are not consistent. And that has stopped them from surpassing larger domestic banks in the minds of the consumers. In this case, IDBI Bank can be a case study for these foreign banks. What RBS did for a year, IDBI Bank has been doing for the last two years now. As per data available with AdEx India, IDBI Bank was one of the top 5 ad-spenders both in FY’08-09 and FY’09-10. Thanks to the ongoing campaigns, its total score in the ICMR-4Ps B&M survey has moved from 79.73 last year to 86.90 this year. From here, the Indian banking sector is poised to see a spectacular rise in competition, as the government is considering issuing new banking licenses to NBFCs, which will add another line of players in the market. Moreover, the competition in the smaller space available for the foreign banks too is set to go up as the RBI has recently allowed a few more tough global banks like ANZ and Credit Suisse to enter the country.

On a positive front, the RBI is set to review its position on the issue of liberalisation of foreign banks in the country. If that happens, it would give the foreign banks an opportunity to scale up in India, but for that, they need to make their ground strong from the very beginning. So far, these banks have been operating mostly in Tier-I cities, but if they have to make it big, then Tier-II and III markets, where Indian banks have a strong hold, also need to be considered. For doing that the foreign banks need a 360 degree approach in terms of marketing and services to be able to gain ground.

The need for a greater customer intimacy is getting amplified by the changing trends in consumer behaviour

With the Indian economy’s appetite for growth refusing to die down and the Great Indian Middle Class story coming true with each passing day, marketers are rushing to get a share of the growing customer pie, and acquisition-based strategies led by one-to-many communication strategies have largely remained in favour. However, many of the marketers were blindsided by the recent recession and only after peeling off layers of misplaced optimism, they found maturing markets, commoditisation of products and fleeting new customers. Coupled with this are the rapidly evolving patterns in consumer dynamism as two main trends that are increasing visible are 1) social networking giving rise to a new found willingness to share more personal information in exchange for personalised services and 2) recession fueling ‘conscious’ against ‘conspicuous’ consumerism. Therefore, the need to invest in knowing and keeping your existing customers in a tearing hurry has never been felt more whether you are dealing with consumers or businesses. The recessionary times, growing media fragmentation and the changing trends in consumer behaviour have forced marketers to find answers to – Who are my customers? Where are they? What are their preferences? How loyal are they to my product/services?

A loyalty program is a long term strategy to identify, retain and grow profitable customers. The IT company that adopts this receptive attitude towards these types of changes and that can effectively integrate them in the company’s branding folio will have a greater success rate in both the Indian and global markets. In 2009 for instance, major Indian players TCS and Wipro reported that several clients had approached them for renegotiations of existing, long-term (5 to 7 years) contracts, citing financial difficulties brought about by the crisis as primary reasons for requested pricing discounts and shortened contract duration. Had these service providers refused the appeals of the clients, multi-million dollar deals may have failed altogether due to the inability of their clients to continue payments. Beyond the financial aspects, a resulting hit on corporate image would have also been experienced. Infosys gives due credit to its corporate flexibility as a foundation for its success in the IT space. According to one of its global managers, Infosys owes much its success to its willingness to make working compromises with clients. The company would rather lower its profit margin and accommodate the demands of a client than lose the client’s confidence altogether. This approach has apparently worked for Infosys – it maintains a positive track record for repeat business at 97%.

The custom-fit approach is also driving IT companies to further develop domain expertise. Products and services are developed with the objective of providing solutions to specific needs of industry verticals. Current industry dynamics require Indian IT companies to bank on their distinct value propositions as their unique selling point. These dynamics prove that the industry is evolving.

Infrastructural development, healthcare and quality education, are spelled as the top priorities for a global India.

Thus, to further strengthen globalization and internationalization, IIPM Lucknow in collaboration with AIESEC Lucknow and SANMARG Events organized a seminar on “Global Exchange” on 27th July 2010. Student representatives from different nations (China, Russia, USA, Japan, Indonesia, and UK) took part in the event.

At the Exchange programme each of these individuals showcased their culture to everybody present while putting together an event that helped everyone to gain international perspective, learn about new cultures and help increase the cultural sensitivity among people.

The most mesmerizing part of the event was when IIPM students and the foreign student representatives got together to dance on a Punjabi number.

For the launch of Virgin Mobile in March 2008, we had invited Sir Richard Branson. True to his style, we had planned for him to jump 300ft off the roof of the Hilton Hotel in Mumbai, right into the middle of waiting journalists. Richard could not make it for the rehearsals. And despite all the precautions we had taken, his advisers were unconvinced about his safety. They were adamant that he jump off a much lower height (if at all) – 60 ft. This was clearly not going to create the magic for us, but the stalemate ensued. Enter Richard. He heard all sides and he then asked – “Who’s in charge here?” I stepped up. We were meeting for the very first time. He looked me square in the eye and asked – “How safe is this?” I told him that the contraption that managed the stunt was the same, whether he jumped off 60ft or 300ft. But the choice was his, as he was making the jump. Here was a multi-billionaire, world-famous icon, business rock star. He looked at me for a few moments, grinned, and said – “300ft it is!” He jumped to a great ovation and outstanding news coverage. How well he had internalised his own words – “I can’t do it myself; so I choose really good people across the world, and let them do their stuff!” For leaders, what can be more important than followership – and what can motivate more than this brand of total and unconditional trust in your people!

My best marketing experience was when I was working for Yatra.com as it was challenging to start building a brand from scratch. At the point when I started working at Yatra, consumers didn’t have an idea what the company was all about and they rather used to ask us what we do. But by the time I had left the company, the Yatra brand was very much familiar to consumers by then. The feeling of achieving and establishing a brand in the minds of consumers from scratch gave a lot of satisfaction to me and in fact, it was an achievement in itself.

Consumers will be willing to pay premium for a direct tangible benefit of a green product, if it reduces exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals at home

GREEN BEHAVIOUR – WHY PEOPLE FAKE IT Dominic Green, the villain in the Bond movie Quantam of Solace, has been portrayed as a fake environmentalist who wants to control water resources under the façade of a social reformer. He owns an eco-resort called the Greene Planet Hotel which he uses to distract people from his scheme to seize valuable water resources. But he is not alone; many can keep his company. People who regularly recycle rubbish and save energy at home are also the ones to take frequent long haul flights. Being green may be part of the desired image; eco-chics wear a halo around them. But another part of the desired profile pushes one to buy a bigger car. Similarly in a hurry to turn green, the definition of an environmentally safe product at times is given a misty cover. A Bombay based company uses polystyrene instead of wood. Dubbed Woodsaver, the pencils should help reduce consumption of about 250 acres of trees used every year by the company. But plastic pencils are no more environment friendly than those made from wood. It is merely a tradeoff between cutting trees and the creation of plastic garbage, which is non biodegradable. So it adds to the permanent litter. Greenwashing, is it?

Faking it is more common in making green claims than in sex! Yet the facts are staring at us starkly in the face. 2009 was the hottest year recorded in India. In fact, of the 12 hottest years in the last 108 years, 8 belong to the past decade. There is a real livelihood that the generation next may never be able to enjoy the sensuous thrill of an oyster washed down with cool, crisp white wine. The treat of battered cod with chips-well, since all fishing stocks will have collapsed by 2048 – would become part of the folklore. There is now a well established case for behaving responsibility, embrace green values.

According to University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, overall people around the world have grown happier during the past three decades. But beyond a certain point, the same research says, material wealth does not boost happiness. US, which ranked 16, has largely stalled in happiness gains – this despite growing buying power. Americans are now twice as rich as they were in 1950, but not more happier. A wrong headed approach to seeking happiness through over consumption is exacerbating some of the world’s most pressing environmental problems. Worse, so called extrinsic values (wealth, power, fame) as opposed to values (adventure, engagement) seem to go hand in hand with more environmentally destructive behaviour. According to Tim Kasser of Knoxx College, Illinois people who are more extrinsically oriented tend to use motorised transport more, buy second hands less, and recycle little. Nations with more individualistic and materialistic values also tend to be more destructive ecologically.

What would be your strategy for the GSM foray?
For our GSM launch we have come up with the philosophy of ‘Think Milke, Think Hatke’, which exhorts Indian youngsters to make connections and use connections. While the youth today is finding the individual within, they are extremely aware that it’s with the push of their friends and extended network that they can make many things happen, which they otherwise can’t. IT’S GOING TO BE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

‘When times are good, you should advertise. When times are bad, you must advertise.’ Though some marketers were not swayed by the logic then, they have now realised that the fastest way to set things right is with a powerful dose of a great advertisement

‘Homely’, because when times are rough, you look back to your home and family for support. You need to be reassured that all are together. Each one counts. Not just at home, but in business too, and the one who understood it best was Microsoft. Business is personal is the theme of its new ads. The print ads looked like ‘fake memos’ complete with words crossed, insertions made with a pen, et al; and as you read through, you realise that it was an announcement of the launch of Microsoft’s new software, which “understood how people really worked.” Read the memo, “…now more than ever, it’s everybody’s business… to come together and form a great company even in a tough economy”. Microsoft seems to have got it absolutely right this year. Its earlier ads never really managed to strike a chord with the audience. And Apple always had had the last laugh – as it scored higher with its comparative ads – making fun of Microsoft’s fuddy-duddy image.

Chrysler too is hoping on ‘hope’ as it begins the New Year. It wanted its consumers to realise that it had emerged from bankruptcy and was a stronger, healthier company. As families came together for the New Year, Chrysler did not lose the opportunity to remind them that this was the very company and the very car that had been bringing home their loved ones and hoped to do so for many years to come. A dash of good cheer and nostalgia is what the new campaign, ‘Coming home’, is filled with. It hopes to once again get the cash registers jingling.

NEW YEAR, NEW MAKEOVER

The spirit of survival is what the coming year will be about, and if it requires a new look, then nobody is asking why. Probably, recession needs to be thanked and not blamed, for it’s recession that forces one to think creatively, to think positively. One company that’s surely been thinking very differently is Idea Cellular. With every cellular company banking on celebrities, this one decided to introduce a new ‘idea’ too. Abhishek Bachchan not just charmed you with his wit, but also showed innovative ways of saving paper. It has truly created a huge improvement in brand recall Sir Ji!

Visualise this on your TV screens…teen girls dancing at a bus stop using an MP3 player – then comes a tag line, ‘Made in China with software from Silicon Valley.’ You got it right! Not just companies, countries too are working hard toward changing their images this time, for it makes good business sense. With ‘Made-in-China’ products taking a major image beating this year, be it toothpaste, toys or pet food, the China Advertising Association decided it was time for a makeover. ‘Made in China, made with the world’, is the theme of the new ad-campaign to help overcome all negative prejudices of the western world.

TAKE THE CROWN OR THE EGGS – CHOOSE NOW!

What will CWG 2010 do for a brand like India? Will it be a showpiece event or will we end up with some hundreds of eggs on our collective face? The question continues

I had been to Beijing recently. I was not fortunate enough to witness the Olympics that were held there, but went to that city soon after the Olympics. The magic continued even after the games. The first thing that one saw (or was floored by) was the airport, which local wisdom suggested was the size of 26 football fields! Once you tore yourself away from the airport you were accosted by miles and miles of newly laid roads, ring roads of mammoth proportions, flyovers all leading to the massive stadia. It had been converted into a major tourist attraction as several people like me, who could not attend the Olympics live, relived the moment. The fitter ones sprinted on the tracks; older ones like us stood on the podium, took pictures and tried hard to be something that we were clearly not-champions! Honestly the visit to Beijing, had the effect, doubtless expected by the hosts, of making many of us feel small and wonder if the progress made by India in recent years was anything to be proud of. But now it is our turn to host the Commonwealth games in Delhi in October 2010. What will the event do for a brand like India? Will it be a showpiece event like the one held in Beijing? Will it enhance our reputation or not? Or will we end up with egg on our collective face?

JUST IN TIME!

Have you been to a wedding a few hours before the actual event. Everything seems to be in a state of total confusion and things disbundeled everywhere. People are running around, voices are being raised, nothing can be found including one’s sense of proportion. But what happens a few hours later? Everything goes like clockwork and people are cheerfully saying cheese to a host of self appointed photographers who are busily taking pictures on their mobile phones! Have you tried visiting a mall, just a day before it is due for opening? I would strongly urge you not to do so, particularly if you have a faint heart! How on earth will this be ready tomorrow, would be the first question that would come to your mind. Brace yourself and make it to the launch the following day and you will find the place barely recognizable as the chaotic venue of the previous day, so wonderful does it look! The optimist in me suggests that even if India is behind schedule at the time of writing and the prophets of doom are shouting from the roof tops about the event’s possible failure, the games, on which so much money is being spent (US$1.6 billion to be precise excluding non related sports related infrastructure development). Mind you this is not the first time we are doing something of this nature; way back in 1982 India hosted the Asian games in Delhi which was supposedly the bigest event of such a magnitude in India till date. For those of you who may have been born later, it was these same Asian games of 1982 that spawned the birth and development of colour TV in this country. Who knows what the Common wealth games will bring about this time around!

INDIA NEEDS YOU

India has a strong breed of middle class intelligentsia. It is educated, vocal and runs the risk of being cynical. We do not need India bashers at this point of time especially with the issues relating to infrastructure hassles. The world is looking at India differently over the last few years particularly. People who were quick to write off our economy and its peoples look at us differently. Enough predictions are being made by people who should know what they are talking about, as to how we will rule the world. Yet our sternest critics are within the country. The enemy is within! We have the opportunity to create a showpiece event and in the bargain make Delhi’s infrastructure not only meet the demands of visiting athletes and tourists from 71 countries but also enable the citizens of India’s capital to experience the best infrastructure in India. The Queen’s baton that has been created is already a showpiece undoutedly. I have no doubt that the games too will be something that India and Indians will be proud of in the future. So as a true Indian I will say that let the games begin and let the criticism be put on hold for a while!

Hayward’s wayward BP ways?

B&E’s Steven Philip Warner talks to various global oil & climate experts from the likes of Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Standard & Poor’s, Argus Research, JBC Energy & Varda Group to find out what awaits BP’s fate? Will BP, which as recently as two months back was the second most valued oil major in the world, disappear?

There are more uncertain words doing the rounds about BP’s present state. In explanation, Simon Redmond, Oil Analyst, Standard & Poor’s tells B&E that the prime reason for this is the erratic manner in which information was concealed and disclosed. That made this incident a PR disaster for BP, which could have a bearing on the company’s future as well. For starters, S&P has already given it a “negative CreditWatch” tag. In other words, sell the stock before it plummets further. “BP’s production growth could be hampered as a result of negative business and regulatory perceptions. S&P is lowering the long and short-term corporate credit ratings on BP to ‘A/A-1’ and keeping BP on CreditWatch negative. Despite claims that some 90% of the spill could eventually be collected on a continuing basis, the leakage remains significant. The likely range of direct costs at $4 billion to $6 billion are manageable for BP. However, the pollution could result in fines that are a multiple of this range,” says Redmond. Hayward has been blamed for not revealing the true state of damage. Initially, the company had handed over a document the Congress, claiming the leakage to be 5,000 barrels per day (bpd). Official estimates of the Macondo oil spill, by the US Coast Guard, put the figure between 35,000-60,000 bpd on June 16, 2010. “Since Deepwater horizon sunk on April 22, BP’s handling of the issue has not been perfect. Possibly the biggest failure in the post accident handling was that BP was not particularly forthcoming about the volume of oil spill, with different assessments over time,” says Vienna-based Johannes Benigni, MD of energy consulting firm JBC Energy to B&E. In one line – there are other fines, penalties, and litigations that could add significantly to the costs likely to be borne by BP over the next several years.

Economic loss is another quarter of worry for most affected areas by the oil spill. Here is an instance - Alabama, Louisiana, Michigan, Florida, which are the four states affected by the spill at present, are forecasted to lose about $14.4 billion in revenues from tourism and fishing over the next four years. While $8.925 billion of the local industry revenue loss will be tourism-related, for the fishing industry, this figure stands at $5.466 billion. Even the oil companies that operate in these four states are forecasted to lose $34.873 billion in topline by April 2013.

The spill has been an embarrassment for BP. It forced Hayward to pledge in public that he will not rest until he “makes this right” and that BP and the entire industry will emerge from the crisis stronger and smarter. IBC Energy’s MD Benigni says, “Without question, BP’s future looks much dimmer now than two months back. BP will still be around in 2020 and beyond, but probably smaller.” We disagree and estimates by industry watchers double our take. While a June 2010 report by Credit Suisse forecasts BP’s net profit to again rise above the $20 billion mark in FY2012 (estimate of $21.3 billion), another report by Goldman Sachs forecasts the figure to touch $22.6 billion in FY2010 and to reach $29.0 billion by FY2012. Good news as far as earnings are concerned.

$1 trillion? Sure...

The US has announced the discovery of minerals apparently worth $1 trillion in Afghanistan – the IIPM Think Tank believes much of this made up value is balderdash and pure hogwash forwarded by the US

Have you heard about the jungle gold digger who announced to the world that he’s found the biggest gold horde underground? Never? That’s not too surprising, as not even a sophomoric mercenary would make the mistake of letting the world onto El Dorado if he found it first – unless, of course, he didn’t find it and simply wanted to conjure one up in order to boast to grandma back home. Or, of course again, the protagonist in question were the conscientiously incorruptible and trustfully industrious United States.

If those adjectives sounded oxymoronic, that’s basically the simple crux of this article’s argument. The recent June 2010 announcement by the US geological survey – a Pentagon study, if anyone expected any less – that they have stumbled onto $1 trillion and beyond of “untapped” mineral deposits (ostensibly iron, copper, cobalt, gold and lithium) in Afghanistan reminds one of the Great Game that was played between the British and the Russians for gaining influence in central Asia in the early phase of the 19th century.

The US is an old hand at peddling such so called discoveries for its mutual convenience – or at not peddling them. During the period that US took over Iraq, did one wonder even once that the Bush regime never gave official confirmation of the oil reserves in Iraq that the US was directly controlling and extracting? Rarely, as it was a given fact that US will siphon off oil money to pay for its war expenses and claims. The truth is, in February 2010, Agence France Presse had already quoted Karzai brandishing a US Geological Survey report that Afghanistan had $1 trillion mineral reserves. The flop attempt at global media publicity went unnoticed then. Clearly, Pentagon’s spin doctors were not too impressed by the February achievement, and re-branded the effort, training Karzai to repeatedly mention that the reserves were between $1 trillion to, hold your grandma’s horses, $3 trillion!

Brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism, Amitabh Bachchan went to the Gir forests to shoot for an advertisement, and was ecstatic to behold the majestic lions. Dressed in a light blue shirt, jeans, boots and a cowboy hat, the enthusiastic super-star went into the forest in an open jeep with a cameraman, and was thrilled to be given the privilege to witness the lions from as close as 25 feet away. The happy ambassador announced that he hadn’t seen so many lions even in an African safari in the Serengeti!

A Landmark Felicitation Ceremony
Amidst the widespread festivities of the internationally celebrated 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM) added another exceptional feather. On May 16, 2010, IIPM announced a landmark movement in the area of literature, culture and fine arts – the inaugural ceremony of Rabindra Smriti Puraskar (Rabindranath Memorial Awards) was organized at the IIPM Kolkata campus at Salt Lake, Kolkata, where awards were handed over to the legendary personalities in the socio-cultural arena.

Explaining the philosophy behind the ceremony, Dr. Malay Chaudhuri, Founder Director of IIPM and Chairperson, IIPM-Rabindra Smriti Puraskar Selection Committee said, “IIPM has always believed in creating an enhanced consciousness in its students in the areas of art, culture and literature. This helps in creating not only a very different perspective in the young minds but also adds to one’s personality and helps in creating a more intellectual breed of new-age managers. Additionally, IIPM wants to touch the life of every individual around us and extend this consciousness for appreciation of art, culture and literature, which will definitely help in strengthening our social bonds and creating a more evolved society.” Famous Bengali writer and the Chief Guest at the award ceremony, Surajit Das Gupta said, “This award ceremony and the societal contribution of this initiative is highly praiseworthy and truly exceptional. Inspirations like these act as catalysts to spread Tagore’s philosophy amongst the newer generations.”

While the evening started with a beautiful song and dance composition performed by IIPM Kolkata students, the most memorable part of the event was of course the actual award ceremony. The awardees included the most respected Dr. Tushar Kanjilal, who was awarded for his exemplary contribution for uplifting the economically downtrodden people of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa, banking on Tagore’s philosophy of rural development. While receiving his award, Dr. Kanjilal said, “Tagore’s heart bled for the poor; his rural philosophy is extremely practical and unique even in today’s scenario.” Another award recipient, the esteemed Selina Hossain, was awarded for her immortal portrayal of the influence of Tagore’s philosophy in the freedom struggle of East-Pakistan in her novel Gayatree Sandhya. She said, “I’m thankful to the IIPM for this rare honour and I’ll donate the entire sum of this prize money to the charitable works that I’ve started after the unfortunate demise of my lovely daughter.” Legendary Rabindra-sangeet artist Suchitra Mitra was awarded for her contribution to make Tagore’s songs a way of life for the common Bengalis. Although she couldn’t attend the ceremony herself, her message was conveyed by a representative: “I would’ve loved to come personally to receive this honour, if health would have permitted me to. But I must not miss this opportunity to thank IIPM for acknowledging my work. This prize ceremony is an exceptional initiative in itself.”

Alright, just this time

Truthfully, we don’t necessarily believe in global warming and the jazz that goes with it; but just for once, we decided to step into the enemy’s shoes and see why the carbon emission spiel of the developed world might work for India Inc. (just this time) by Gyanendra Kumar Kashyap

With mercury breaking its own record each passing day, it would not be of a surprise if Newton’s law of motion, more specifically the third law, is read as: every action of yours has an equal and opposite carbon reaction. And why not! An air-conditioner (2.5 tonne) emits approximately 3 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) per day (if run throughout); a car with an average mileage of 10 kilometres per litre leaves 232 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Add to it the fact that the most essentials appliances of our modern day daily life also takes a severe toll on the environment. It’s not just a microwave oven, which per day generates 1.3 kg of CO2, or a geyser that generates close to 3.3 kg of CO2 per day, even washing machines, refrigerators, mixers, heaters, computers, flat screen TVs, mobile phones et al, they all are part of the league that is emitting numerous carbon particles every moment. Thanks to these, today we are in need of concepts like carbon footprints (a measure of the exclusive total amount of carbon dioxide emissions that is directly and indirectly caused by an activity or is accumulated over the life stages of a product; the smaller the carbon footprint, the more environment-friendly is the activity or the product).

While policy leaders across the globe are negotiating an effective post 2012 international framework to deal with the problems relating to climate change, it is apparent that India Inc. have realised that being carbon sensitive makes for a great business sense (for the uninitiated the global market for low carbon energy efficient technologies will be $3 trillion by 2050). Thus being proactive corporate, they foresee a huge demand in the future and hence are developing environmental friendly technologies and infrastructure. This will not only help them to save millions of dollars, but will also portray them as responsible corporations.

Moreover, a number of domestic corporations have voluntarily developed technology road maps for cutting down their carbon footprints. Most of them have either moved into LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified green buildings or have taken special steps for energy and water conservation. But more than any regulatory compulsion, or social incentives for a cleaner environment and positive PR, the biggest incentive for India Inc toeing the green bandwagon is the fact that it helps them garner greenbacks against their savings in terms of carbon credits.

The intrigue of the islands

A mysterious and fascinating set of islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, ready to give your most adventurous imagination wings…

The British came here and so did the Japanese, but the mystery of the group of islands that is Andaman and Nicobar islands was never quite unravelled. Even after years of studies and observations, practically little is known of the origin and the people of these islands and this sense of intrigue and the feeling of a mysterious air about the place will overwhelm you if you happen to land on these islands – any of the 572 of them cradled perilously in the Bay of Bengal.

There is a sense of the primordial among the flora, fauna and the indigenous people of the islands – the most fascinating bit about exploring the Andamans. Always inhabited by aboriginal tribes, many of whom still live the lives of hunters and gatherers, the inaccessibility of the islands had made them an object of fascination. The existence of the islands had been known for centuries (they find reference in early historical writings of Roman geographer Ptolemy) but the first attempt at an outside settlement on the islands was by the British in 1789. They had to abandon it seven years later because of the inhospitable locals and the immense logistical challenge of connectivity to the mainland.

Oddly, they returned in 1858, this time establishing a penal settlement – the dreaded and the feared ‘Kaala Paani’ or the Cellular Jail. The jail held mutineers from the First War of Indian Independence, even some criminal tribes and refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan apart from other freedom fighters later on. My visit to the jail was a unique experience because a first-hand experience of the conditions there is enough to make your hair stand on its end. You can go around the courtyard, see the cells and the gallows and also look over the horizon from atop the wings. One bit of trivia I got to know was that the sight of the lighthouse and the island imprinted on our twenty Rupee notes is a view from the top of the wing facing the sea. The prison initially had seven wings, with the watch tower at the centre. Today, only three remain (the rest had been destroyed by the Japanese during World War II), and it has been branded a national monument. The Japanese briefly controlled the islands from 1942-1945, a period in which though innocent blood was shed, there was development of the basic amenities, especially in Port Blair.

‘B’usiness ‘P’rocess ‘O’utdated!

The prime driver for BPOs in India has always been cost effictiveness, but that differentiating factor is now fading away. Is Indian BPO industry finally headed towards the death bed? by Ashutosh Harbola

The threat from Vietnam cannot be undermined too. While salaries of BPO workers in Vietnam are the lowest among almost all major offshore destinations (they are 40% lower than India and China, and more than 80% lower than Singapore), tax rates, too, are at par with other emerging markets. For instance, outsourcing software development work to a Vietnamese firm can cost a company up to 50% less than what it would have cost it had it outsourced the work to India. Even outsourcing companies in the Middle-East are now giving tough competition to Indian BPOs by moving up the value chain. If industry experts are to be believed, their efforts have resulted in an annual growth of over 20%. Historically, a large talent pool has been one of India’s major strengths, but if one goes by a latest ASOCIO-KPMG report, employability of Indian graduates at present is considered to be really low, with Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) rating India as 2 on a scale of 5 on quality of labour force. This has made multinationals hesitant in outsourcing their work to India.

The next stumbling block is the high attrition rate in the Indian BPO industry which is invariably high (35%) when compared to its Asian counterparts. The increasing cases of data breaching too are affecting outsourcing to third parties in India. Then there is the slated withdrawal of STPI scheme in FY 2011. The sunset clause u/s 10A and 10B of the Income Tax Act gives a tax holiday to IT-BPO companies operating under an STPI, where the tax rate works out to be 20% for a BPO at present. This is expected to go up to 33% if the scheme is withdrawn. In all, the future of the BPO industry doesn’t look as sunny as road mapped by Nasscom with optimism deep sunk within. So is the major job provider (2.23 million) finally heading towards the death bed or is there a way out?

One possible way out could be to take BPOs to tier 2 and tier 3 cities where rising costs could be managed as compared to high cost offerings in the metros or tier 1 cities. The challenge there will be the training gap, but the investment does have long term potential. The next way could be to innovate within long term sustainable verticals like KPO (Knowledge Process Outsourcing), LPO (Legal Process Outsourcing), et al, for which even outsourcers are ready to pay a high price as they derive utility from them. “BPO will continue to evolve, both in form and substance, from simple processes in the beginning to complex KPOs later, involving support to business decision processes and consulting for optimal performance. Business itself will begin to look like a project management process (think construction projects) compared to the familiar current business. My Asian mind tells me that BPO will re-incarnate in another form, more suitable and responsive to the shape of the global economy,” Eugene Reyes, VP – Business Development North America, BPO International, Inc. tells B&E. Even Joel Perlman, Co-founder & President, Copal Partners feels that the next big opportunity for India could be DPO (Document Process Outsourcing) “KPOs & DPOs are high growth areas and India is well positioned to become a leader here,” he tells B&E. K. M. Nanaiah, MD, Pitney Bowes too holds the same view and feels that DPOs certainly have the potential to be the next big thing in India.

No doubt, because of its sustained cost competitiveness, experienced and large labour force, India has been considered to be a favourable BPO location in the past. But not any more! With radical changes in global economic environment & growing sophistication of customer needs, it’s now inevitable to evolve further. It’s therefore imperative for all stakeholders to identify challenges and put an action plan in place to meet them and identify areas that can catalyse future growth. If they are able to do so, good enough! If not, BPO, an acronym that most Indians rejoiced in, will soon become a reason to mourn over!

A TSI sting operation finds how paedophilia has turned into a thriving business in Delhi, NCR and Mumbai. Taking advantage of kids’ poverty and craze for brands and gadgets, middlemen get rich by supplying minor boys and girls to satiate the desire of sick, rich men, many of them NRIs and foreigners. By Abhishek Kumar and Neeraj Rajput

Dutch national Will Heum’s arrest in Chennai for having sex with minors and uploading pornographic pictures on the Internet came as an isolated shock to the nation. But a TSI investigation finds out that paedophilia is rampant in India’s cities. The number of sick and rich individuals who want to have sex with minors is large enough to sustain a thriving business involving middlemen and child sex workers. So if any of you thought paedophilia was a western malaise that would not affect India, you could not be more mistaken.

Children are the easiest to be taken advantage of. Poverty as well as their desire to own the latest gadget make them vulnerable to overtures of middlemen. Most kids, whom the TSI team met, had told their parents that they were going for study or dance lessons. To explore more, the TSI special investigative team visited Faridabad, Noida, Delhi, Mumbai and Goa many times. What was astounding was that despite being minors, these kids spoke and reasoned like adults, obviously trained by the pimps who brought them along. Another startling fact is that not only kids from poor and needy families are being trapped in this racket. Kids from rich or well-to-do families are also lured into the trap.

We got lead about Ansh, a pimp in Noida. One of us posed as an Australian NRI on the phone and he agreed to meet us. The next day, we met Ansh at a coffee outlet in Noida market. We reached much before time, eager to find out who all accompanied him. There were two more people, one of them a girl. When we met him, a kid sitting next to him greeted us. He said he was 14 years old, but looked younger. The smartly dressed kid looked like from a well-to-do family. The kid said his father was a big officer in Indian Railways. He was so confident that we felt we were not talking to a child but a professional.

TSI - Where do you study?
Boy-I am in the XIIth standard

TSI-What is your age?
Boy-14 yrs

TSI- But you don’t appear 14. Incase you are wondering where I got your number from, I saw an ad in the newspaper and picked it up.
Ansh-Yes. We have advertised many times in newspapers.

TSI-What do you advertise for?
Ansh-For body massage

We could feel that Ansh did not appreciate us having a long conversation with the boy. But since we don’t want to take them to a hotel or any other place, we need all our answers then and there. It’s an uncomfortable situation; but we press on. We said we were surprised that kids were so easily available here in India too. The boy immediately replied that India was getting rapidly westernised and you get to find such kids in virtually every corner of the country. He added he wanted money so that he could buy a Yamaha Fazer motorcycle. Asked if he would feel awkward later, he categorically said no.

Are they ‘Nuts’?! A crazy success recipe...

There was a time when buying aircraft and flying overseas appeared just another plan for Indian aviators. The slowdown ensured everybody cut on fleet and rationalised routes. All except one – SpiceJet! Are they nuts (apart from being, er, India’s only profitable airline company right now)?! by Steven Philip Warner

Kevin Freiberg created a global ruckus when, in 1996, in a book titled Nuts!: Southwest Airline’s Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success, he profiled Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher’s salacious, radical, nutty, yet fantastic strategies to make his fleet one of the few profitable airlines (sometimes, the only one profitable) in the US. The increase in air traffic due to Herb’s then eccentric strategies – low fares, no frills, short skirts, long legs and that jazz – was so dramatic that the US Department of Transportation introduced a formal term – ‘The Southwest Effect’. It’s weird, but it’s only a matter of time before ‘The SpiceJet Effect’ gets formal usage in Indian skies.

The carrier will now become the first Indian low cost carrier (LCC) to fly overseas. This at a time when everybody is cutting fleet size faster than you can say Jack Robinson. But there’s reason behind this madness. During a year when the domestic aviation industry lost Rs.70 billion (in addition to accumulated losses of Rs.260 billion, as per the Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation, CAPA) and the global industry loss totalled $9.4 billion (as per IATA), SpiceJet recorded a positive bottomline of Rs.532 million! SpiceJet was the only Indian airline in profits for the whole year!

Three years ago, the same airlines was in doldrums. When we had met SpiceJet’s CEO Siddhant Sharma at that time, he had no answers for the unhealthy price cuts, scramble for scanty infrastructure and plummeting market shares. In fact, like us, he was equally baffled about the airline’s future. SpiceJet’s stock price was in trouble too. In the seven months leading to July 14, 2008, it had lost 71% of its value. What changed since then so dramatically? Umm, the CEO. Siddhant had to resign.

It took the board three months, to bring Sanjay Agarwal on board as the new CEO, whose job was to repair, restore and relaunch. He did; and very well too. In the past 12 months, SpiceJet has been the highest gaining airline stock (in relative terms), having increased in value by close to 300% (to touch Rs.59.60 as on April 27, 2010), while the Sensex rose 60%.

Profitability has become a phenomenon hard to come by in the business of Indian aviation; logical reasoning has become harder. But SpiceJet is clearly an exception. It has learnt from the mistakes of others. During the past couple of years, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines have been loud about ‘long-distance’ expansions to Europe & US. But given a choice, they’d play silent about their books. In the nine months ended December 31, 2009, Kingfisher Airlines reported losses of Rs.10.75 billion (after losing Rs.16.09 billion in FY2008-09). Jet Airways is a reflection. Its loss for the first three quarters of FY2009-10, stands at Rs.5.26 billion (after a loss of Rs.4.02 billion in FY2008-09). Clearly, their international bets haven’t paid off too well. Then what about SpiceJet’s international plans? Says B.Somaia, Regional Director of Sydney-based CAPA to B&E, “International operations are far more complex than domestic due to issues related to regulatory requirements, language, foreign exchange, the need for new distribution networks et al. The management cannot lose focus on the core domestic market just as the situation is stabilising. Building the brand overseas will take time & investment.”

In recent times, the Hazratbal shrine was again in the media attention worldwide and become the epicentre of tension between Kashmiri Muslims and the army when a group of about 40 militants entered the shrine in October 1993. After the militants occupied the shrine, the Indian Army surrounded it to fish the armed occupants out. But the Army's siege of the holiest Muslim shrine soon ignited public outrage. As the mosque crisis deepened, there were massive public demonstrations. The cordon was lifted after a few days to provide a safe passage to the militants.

A few years ago, Vishwa Hindu Parishad stirred up a hornet’s nest with its rhetoric that the holy relic preserved there is actually that of Nimnath Baba. According to BJP leader Vinay Katiyar, Nimnath Baba is a dharmaguru or religion leader of the Hindus and was settled in Mecca. There was sharp reaction in the Valley to Katiyar’s claim as it was seen as a deliberate attempt to hurt the feelings of Kashmiri Muslims.

The present state government has worked out a prestigious plan aimed at beautification of the shrine area, which on completion will be a prototype of the Taj Mahal. After all, the pristine precincts of Hazratbal are no less than the taj of Srinagar.

The Managing Director of Nikon India reveals to neha saraiya how, after entering India just before the slowdown, they managed to rewrite the competition game

B&E: Your competitors have introduced various innovative features in their product line like underwater photography mode, pet (dog/cat) detection feature, blink detection et al. So what innovation are you planning to introduce in your product range?
HT: Innovative technology in a user friendly package is by far the most important element in any camera in this new era. This is what Nikon cameras deliver. Some of the unique features introduced in the COOLPIX segment are Smile Mode, Food Mode, Wide Angle, Fast Start Up Time, D-lighting, Face Priority, Vibration Reduction, Voice Recording, Video Recording etc. We also have recently made a path breaking innovation like World’s first Compact camera with in-built projector. Built-in projector enables consumers to share their images and videos in an all-new fun way. Further adding to our technological advancement EXPEED digital image processing concept ensures high-quality pictures with stunning color and sharpness. Thanks to our strong R&D team that these features originally meant for D-SLRs are now available in the COOLPIX cameras too, allowing an amateur as well to capture the best images with utmost ease.

B&E: Do already existing big players, like Canon and Sony pose a big threat to you?
HT: Competition helps companies to continue innovating and bring the best for end consumers. Indian camera market is growing and so is the focus of different companies towards this huge untapped market. In that case we believe that the market will purely get driven by, reach, great product and image quality followed by an effective marketing communications. It’s more than imperative to bring more features and technology upgrades to remain competitive in the industry. It’s just a matter of who brings them first and the best.

B&E: Last year, you revamped your retail presence in India and adopted the shop-in-shop retail concept to reach out to your consumers. How has the transition been and has it worked for you?
HT: By doing so we have increased our brand visibility and presence across the outlets. Nikon lays emphasis in increasing the number of Nikon shop-in-shop stores, which are based on Nikon’s core belief of providing touch and feel experience that facilitates buying decision of the discerning customers at point of purchase.

B&E: You have also revamped your distribution strategy in India. What is the rationale behind it and how do you seek to leverage it?
HT: Recently, Nikon has undertaken an initiative of moving from a national distribution network to regional and channel specific distribution hubs ensuring its customers receive enhanced services. This means that Nikon has come closer to its end-users to facilitate the company gaining strength in each potential region. The will also further contribute to camera sales across the Photo, IT & Consumer electronic channel.

Journey from the virtual life to the real world may need just one halt – the rehab!

“I thought I had failed. It almost felt as if we’ve lost him. My child’s future had been compromised. But was I to be blamed? He wouldn’t come out of his room for days at a stretch. His eating habits scared me. And there was nothing that motivated him to come out of his room and interact with the outer world. I used to be terrified at the mere mention of a blackout in the colony, as he would get abusive and sometimes hit me too. The only interaction he preferred was in his virtual life. Kanav (name changed) was almost omnipresent on all social networking sites. He would spend long hours chatting to friends he might never meet in his life and his only strengths lay in the gaming arena. Facebook, Twitter, Counter Strike and Farmville were some of his favourite hangout joints. Chicken burger and fries with a large coke or a pepperoni pizza was his staple diet. As a worried mother of this single child, I had visited several psychologists and babas, but to my horror this only increased Kanav’s aggressiveness. He barely managed to scrape through school and within two months dropped out of college. I am a sensitive mother and I never wanted to use old-school methods on him. Providing for one’s kids is more than a moral obligation for caring parents. Little did we know that all these gizmos would one day become an obsession for him…”

Mrs. Chandra broke down while narrating her ordeal in dealing with her tech-addicted kid. It might sound unreal, but in London similar cases are being handled at a tech-rehab, which helps people get rid of their tech addictions. Specifically focussing on teenagers (although even adults may be equally addicted), the specialists feel that during the developing days of innocent young minds, the harmful effects are magnified. Tech addiction might lead to an increase in agitation, hyper-arousal, inability to concentrate and ultimately depression. In order to counter such technology addiction amongst adolescents or ‘screenagers’, Capio Nightingale Hospital (pioneers of tech rehab) has developed a tri-partite programme, which can be tailored to meet the patient’s needs. From intensive in-patient care to day-care, group and individual therapy, the programme is designed to increase off-screen social activities and developing strategies to cope with online problems, especially issues pertaining to cyber-bullying. “Young people are preoccupied with social media and online celebrity status, which is like an ‘Internet X Factor’. They want to be a part of this world and have other people following them and what they do,” comments Dr. Richard Graham, Consultant Child & Adolescen

Whose crime is it anyway?

With a spurt in cases relating to adultery and toothless laws governing it, is there need to relook at norms that are as adultrated?

“I sort of felt uneasy when I first entered his house.As if its very aura was crying out loud and warning me against something. It was hard to tell why as I wasn’t supposed to worry about anything at all... It should’ve been the happiest day of my life, after all I had just been married! His was a close-knit joint family, yet I felt uncomfortable and sensed something was being brushed under the carpet.

The first few months passed fairly well but it didn’t take too long for the ‘honeymoon period’ to get over. My hubby rushed in one day, agitated without reason, reprimanded me for things I clearly wasn’t at fault for and stormed out. I kept waiting for him with a watchful eye on the clock thinking he’s out with friends sharing his problems – I didn’t realise when I drifted into a slumber while I waited for him – until the next morning when I woke up and passed by my brother in-law’s room, which had a partly-opened door, and saw my husband sleeping with my brother in-law’s wife. Shattered as I was, I raised an alarm and to my horror, nobody even raised an eyebrow! My protests were simply brushed aside and everybody continued with their daily chores. I would’ve discussed things and may be also forgiven if it was a one-off incident. But once it was out in the open, no one else had any problem with it, including the man whose wife was sleeping with my husband. The sheer boldness of their actions was piercing my soul as I watched helplessly. I had lost my father long back and couldn’t muster the courage to drop this bomb on my aging mother. Not just that, I was also carrying this man’s baby. Regular altercations, domestic violence and eventually divorce is what followed.”

Nishi was inconsolable while talking to this correspondent, and while this is just one side of the story, there is more one needs to know before passing a judgement. Those who are supposedly safeguarding our interest and responsible to help us get justice are equally helpless in such cases. “The Indian social set-up is such that the archaic Indian Penal Code also seems like a victim of gender discrimination. It suggests that, ‘Man is a seducer and the married woman is merely his hapless and passive victim. Wife of the man, if he is married, who had consensual sexual intercourse with another woman, married or unmarried, is not deemed to be an aggrieved party and thereby is precluded from making a formal complaint against either her husband or the adulteress woman.’ And, ‘a married man, with impunity, may seduce and establish sexual liaison with an unmarried woman, a widow, or a divorcee, even though such a sexual link is equally potential to wreck the marriage between him and his wife;’” says Advocate Harry Rikhy. As of now we are in dire need to decide: Are these laws relevant in the present day scenario, and is adultery really a crime? And if so, how can we be fair to the aggrieved? After all, it’s hard to simply move on saying ‘que sera sera’!

TSI Five-O: Adventurous summer fun, Disney style

In the Disney tradition of turning theme rides and fairy tales into full blown movie franchises, “Prince of Persia” also turns out to be pretty enjoyable fun fare. Of course, it is modelled on the highly successful eponymous video game and the elements of adventure that made the game such a favourite come alive on the screen too. Mike Newell, the director, deserves some credit for that and having handled adventure in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, he is no stranger to the genre. The script is not as sliver thin as you might guess with a video game (the original game itself had a great backstory) and the casting also helps with Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley lending solidity to the performances and the action sequences ringing in the excitement.

The plot borrows from the game – the prince has to stop the evil ruler from getting his hands on the sands of time which will unleash an apocalyptic storm that will turn back time – but there are some refreshing twists along the way. Young Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) is an accomplished warrior who is adopted by the King of Persia. But, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy when the king passes away under mysterious circumstances. Dastan is accused of murder and is on the run with princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton), who he encountered at a battle in the holy city of Alamut. While he tries to clear his name with help from the princess, he realises the real conspiracy runs deeper as the evil Nizam (Ben Kingsley) is trying to gain control of the sands of time – a mystical weapon capable of changing the fabric of time. The chase against time offers enough opportunities for showcasing the parkour style fight sequences that players of the video game will recall. First time viewers will love the energy and the excitement as well.

The real stars of the movie are director Mike Newell and the producer with the magic touch, Jerry Bruckheimer. The foundation is well set for the sequels to be rolled out, and the Pirates franchise is any indication, I would say – bring it on! You’ll enjoy the experience whether you were a fan of the game or not but don’t go looking for intellectual stimulation and have fun watching the lovely landscapes and breathtaking action. More importantly, don’t dismiss it as a poor movie cousin of the video game (remember Max Payne and Lara Croft?) either.

Killer roads take a toll

Experts attribute road accidents to overspeeding

Some twenty-five passengers were injured when a bus collided with a truck on the NH 31 at Pathsala in Barpeta district on the night of May 16.

Nearly fifteen schoolchildren were injured when a school bus (AS 15-1616) fell into a ditch on May 22 at Burah in Darrang district.

Local dailies in Assam unfailingly reports about such road accidents. According to government statistics, during the past one decade road accident cases have doubled in the state. In 2000, some 2,429 road accident cases were reported. But the figure increased to 4,869 in 2009. Accidental deaths in 2009 were 1,991 as against 1,032 in 2000. In comparison to all India level, Assam shares 44 per cent of accidental deaths.

In Guwahati city, some 626 motor accident cases took place in 2007; 626 in 2007; 641 in 2008 and 508 in 2008. Among districts Sonitpur registered a maximum 363 accidental cases in 2009. Lower Assam’s Dhubri district and Barak valley’s Cachar district stood second and third with 346 and 306 accidental cases. Out of 4,686 accidents taking place in the state in 2008, as many as 2,683 accidents took place on national highways; 849 were on state highways and the remaining 1,151 on other roads of the state.

City Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Bibekananda Das told TSI that the traffic branch of city police is compiling last five years’ data of road accidents to study them. Only after completion of the process, decision could be taken to prevent accidents, the newly appointed SP (traffic) said. Traffic experts attribute road accidents to overspeeding and even increasing cars on the roads. “Untrained drivers, fake licence holders and absence of civic sense among people are also responsible for increasing number of accidents,” Violet Baruah, SP (CID) told TSI. The problem is further compounded when some drivers don’t obey traffic rules, she said.

According to the rule, mobile phones should not be used during driving and seat belts should be fastened, but only a few people obey them. Drunk driving is also responsible for several road accidents in the state.

Some would agree, others not. B S NarayanaSwamy grills the CM on issues political and social exclusively for TSI

You’ve been in office for two years. Are you satisfied with the work done by your government so far?

A person should not be satisfied with the results at any point. Because once you are satisfied, you are likely to stop working hard. We have done a lot of work in the last two years, but a lot more remains to be done in the coming years.

Your government is going to spend hundreds of crores of rupees on the two-day Global Investors Meet (GIM) next month in Bangalore. How feasible is the move to invite huge investments when the state is facing a severe power crunch?

Some brainless people are spreading the rumour that we are spending Rs 1000 crore on GIM. Actually, the expenditure is not even Rs 100 crore. As for the power crisis, I would like to inform you that the government is not going to provide power to every new industry. Many industries would generate power for themselves and would perhaps give the surplus to us. There’s no need to worry.

I am sure that in terms of the overall development of the state, the GIM will become a milestone. We are expecting to attract huge investments—about four lakh crore rupees, to be precise—in a number of areas such as infrastructure, micro and small enterprises, tourism, education, power and health. We are focussing on development in both rural and industrial sectors and simultaneously to generate employment. Many global industrial giants are participating in the event.

It’s being said that the government is more interested in global investment than in rehabilitating lakhs of people displaced by last year’s massive flood?

During the last two-three decades, more than 350 villages have been repeatedly ravaged by floods. But previous governments did not care to make any arrangements for the rehabilitation of those affected. Last year’s flood was of unprecedented magnitude. Now they (the Opposition) are accusing us of not paying attention to this matter. But the fact is that my government is keen to rehabilitate flood-affected people, and we have already done a lot for them. We have distributed the compensation money and have allotted dwelling units to the affected. We are planning to allot around 10,000 more houses this month. It was delayed due to the model code of conduct for the gram panchayat elections. We have acquired around 5000 acres of land to build more dwelling units for the affected. The process for laying power lines and providing drinking water is on. Why, even union home minister Mr. P. Chidambaram appreciated our efforts and speedy work towards rehabilitation.

According to a recent study jointly conducted by FICCI and KAF (Konrad Adenauer Foundation), 42 per cent of the investors are not happy with conditions in the state. They say starting a business here is difficult…

As compared to the neighbouring states, Karnataka has far better conditions and infrastructure for investment. Perhaps the only difficulty is the power supply. But we have already taken steps to generate sufficient power. I hope Karnataka would be self-sufficient in the power sector very soon.

The Opposition says that the power crisis is not as much about production as it is about distribution? Is it true?

They make these accusations to hide their own mistakes committed during their rule. The power leakage during distribution has come down by 25 per cent in our regime.

Your government has repeatedly been accused of trying to protect some tainted ministers. The Opposition has been demanding their dismissal but you have not yielded so far?

It’s not the Opposition’s job to advise as to who should be in the cabinet and who should be thrown out. It’s the people, and not the Opposition, who decide who is tainted and who’s not. And the people have given their mandate to us. There is no tainted minister in my cabinet. The Opposition keeps levelling such accusation just for the sake of it.

What do you think of the Governor’s show-cause notice to your tourism minister G. Janardhana Reddy, seeking explanation on his alleged involvement in some illegal activities?

I don’t want to comment on this.

Experts have opined that the recently inaugurated Mysore airport has failed to meet international standards…

I have already made it clear that we will extend full support to the agencies concerned for putting in place the safety mechanisms in Mysore airport and the other proposed airports in Shimoga and Gulbarga. We have instructed that passenger safety should be given priority in the construction of these two airports.

Why has your promise of granting more power to the Lokayukta not materialised yet?

The issue will be discussed in the coming Legislative Assembly session. We will take a decision soon.

What’s your opinion on the UPA government’s proposed amendments to the RTI Act?

The central government should not take any decision in this regard in a hurry. It should allow for a national debate on the issue and then consider all shades of opinion before taking a final decision on the amendment to the RTI Act.

Which department in the state has been the best performer in your view?

I would not like to mention any particular department. All the departments are development-oriented though some departments need to initiate more reforms. I am glad to mention that in the rural development area, we are the number one state in the country. Also, Mysore is rated as the second best city in Indian in terms of sanitation and overall cleanliness.

Your government has seen many controversies during the two years of your rule. How do you feel regarding these imbroglios?

We have passed through many agni pareekshas (trials by fire) successfully in the last two years of my regime. We are confident that we will complete the remaining three years just as successfully.

Iconic sari gets recognition

It is all the rage in Kerala and other places, including Delhi

Balaramapuram village is at the centre of attraction after Kerala’s iconic “Balaramapuram Sari’’ has received Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection through Geographical Indications Act (GI Act).

The village is extremely popular in the state for producing such a wonderful sari. Thousands of weavers make the traditional Kerala Kasavu Sari for women and Kasavu Mundu for men in off-white with golden borders in this six square kilometres textile land — near Thiruvananthapuram. They are designed to be worn specially on propitious occasions. According to industry sources, about 27,000 handlooms operate in the village to produce these saris. The weavers — shaliyar community — use traditional throw-shuttle pit looms, fly shuttle looms and make cotton fabrics with pure zeri (kasav) or coloured yarn.

Hundreds of families, including women, are fully involved in weaving these saris. More than 200 cooperative societies are active in this area. They are fully involved in the production and distribution of the products. The Balaramapuram textiles are sold throughout Kerala through Hantex, and the exclusive shops of zeri textiles like Kasavu Kada and Karal Kada. “We never depend on mechanised systems like dobby, jacquard and jala. The imagination of the weavers and the excellence in silver covering and the gold plating of the silk make Balaramapuram matchless. We have no professional designers and fashion consultants. Our clothes are pure eco-friendly and survive for long,’’ says B.AnilKumar, a weaver at Balaramapuram.

Balarampuram sari is famous for its varieties. One can select saris from the price range of Rs 500 to 40,000. The weavers say that the North Indians, especially Delhiites, are fond of these costly saris. The gold, silver content of the zari is the significant factor which adds the brand value of the Balaramapuram clothes. “The present protection under the IPR confirms its uniqueness,’’ says Anilkumar, a trader.

But most of the weavers are apprehensive about the special protection. Besides, they fear that the traditional art may die as youngsters are not joining the profession. Of late their biggest worry has been the arrival of mechanically produced Kasavu sari that is available in the market for only Rs 100. Since then, the Balaramapuram sari has been facing a stiff competition.

Mamata gives Left Front a lifeline

Trinamool chief severs all ties with the Congress in West Bengal as seat sharing talks for election to 81 civic bodies fail, Chandrasekhar Bhattacharjee writes

The ensuing municipal elections in West Bengal may provide a much-needed breather to the ruling Left Front dispensation, courtesy the fresh feud between the Trinamool Congress and the Indian National Congress in the state. TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee announced severing of all ties with the Congress in the state, adding that the party will go it alone for control of all the 81 civic bodies. In fact, during the seat-sharing parleys, both parties were sticking to their guns by not sparing seats for the other in their respective areas of dominance. This has come as a silver lining for the Left Front (read CPM) and rendered people advocating ‘change’ shattered.

The elections to the 81 civic bodies, slated on May 30, have seen the State Election Commission facing severe criticism for announcing the date of polls nearly a month before the date of notification without enforcing the Model Code of Conduct. This allowed the Left Front to dole out election lollies in the shape of new programmes. Ministers continued with inauguration or stone-laying ceremonies, distribution of flats, announcing sops for hawkers, etc. None objected, not even the Trinamool Congress. The last date for submitting nomination was fixed on May 3 but the commission suo moto extended it by a day on the pretext of Bharat Bandh on April 27 and May Day, which is unprecedented. Despite the fact that the commission in West Bengal obeys what the bosses at CPM headquarters on Alimuddin Street dictate, the CPM state secretary, Biman Bose, criticised the commission. Observers think this act of the Left Front chairman is nothing but a mere eye-wash. The Left Front government pulled the commission’s sanctity to zero when the commission announced that only the police would be used to guard polling booths. It got the wildest response from the home department. The department, which is headed by the chief minister himself, declared that home guards (mostly party cardres) will also be posted to maintain law and order in polling booths. The commission, obviously, has not reacted to this ever since.

Having received a serious jolt in the Lok Sabha elections last year, the CPM appeared to be in serious crisis this time as the Mayor of Kolkata Corporation and the chairman of Salt Lake Municipality were both dropped. Both came out in the open and said they could not do much due to resistance from party bosses. The Salt Lake Municipality chairman refused to contest from another ward leaving his own for someone else. The chairpersons of Arambagh and Rishra (both CPM-held) both got re-nominations only after declaring revolt against the party. Inter-party feud between Left Front partners have been reported from all over the state.

People were hopeful of change but their aspirations got shattered after TMC unilaterally announced a list of 115 candidates out of 141 councillor seats for Kolkata. Mamata was not ready to allow the Congress to contest more than 25 seats while the Congress had bagged 21 seats in last municipal poll and stood second in more than 30 seats. On the other hand, TMC, which won 47 seats in last election, now wants to contest 116 seats. Mamata says, “As the Congress is not sharing seats with us in Murshidabad, Malda and Jalpaiguri, we have no responsibility to share more seats in Kolkata.” She even refused to call the Congress a ‘friend’ and accused the century-old party of hobnobbing with BJP to help the CPM. While announcing the revised and final list of 141 candidates for Kolkata Municipal Corporation, she thundered, “Even the combined support of the Congress and the BJP will not help CPM in defeating TMC.”

The fact is that, Congress leaders like Keshav Rao and Ahmed Patel tried their level best to keep the alliance intact and requested Mamata to share just 41 seats. Later they dropped their demand to only 35 seats. Their effort went in vain. Being ignored by the partner, Congress activists twice vandalised the Pradesh Congress office and broke its window panes. As all parleys failed and the deadline for nomination drew close, the PCC announced a list of 88 candidates for Kolkata Municipal Corporation with a call to renegotiate the whole thing afresh. But, Mamata’s final decision to sever all ties, not only in Kolkata but the whole state, forced the Congress leaders to declare candidates for 100 seats. Interestingly, while she snapped all ties with the Congress in the state, she declared that she and her colleagues will remain in the UPA.

‘Do not put all eggs in Russian basket’

Air Vice Marshal (retd) Kapil Kak, Additional Director, Centre for Air Power Studies talks to TSI

How do you see the future of IAF?

We need to retrospect what kind of air force we want. Unless we work on the concept, we won’t grow. India is one of the few countries whose political future is bright. Asia has changed a lot. It is a lot more powerful, thanks to the emergence of India and China.

What is your analysis of the Indian Air Force of today?

If we look at hardware, IAF has huge weakness in terms of numbers of combat platforms and numbers are important. I agree that we have platforms like Su 30 MKI which is a powerful machine. But so do our likely adversaries who are growing and not compromising on technology and numbers. So why should India compromise? The fact that the number of combat squadrons has dropped down from the sanctioned 39.5 to below 30 should worry every Indian. But we have great strength of leadership at multiple levels in terms of our men and officers. The Indian Air Force is not the best paymaster but thanks to its rigorous training and motivation, it has done excellently well. It will get back to 39 but it will take some years. With changing times, air power and maritime power have become crucial for national security. IAF has always favoured an Indian-built aircraft rather than imported ones. IAF is extremely sensitive to genuine indigenous technology. IAF has paid a huge price for delayed replacement of MiG 21. The LCA Tejas was supposed to be inducted by 1995 and today after 15 years we are finally doing it. The Indian Air Force should be linked to the process of energising the aerospace and defence industry. We can have a good mix of Tejas and Fifth generation fighter aircraft. In terms of reach, we have to ensure our interests are safeguarded and our Diaspora is protected.

Do you think the procurement process is timely?

The Parliament Consultative Committees and Parliament Standing Committees have been taking long and our procurements are getting delayed. A national decision is made that we will get the LCA and it takes fifteen years. A decision is made to get multi-role aircraft and it takes years because our decision making process is unprofessionally structured. The Kargil Group of Ministers had recommended that we should have multiple teams of decision making with finance, commercial, technological, defence teams arriving at parallel decisions to save crucial time. One a need is confirmed, why can’t there be one window where all the concerned decision makers are present together? There is no integration which is the biggest problem. We need a fast track process. The decision-making system is archaic. Nowhere in the world, it takes so long.

What is your evaluation about the six contenders for MMRCA contract?

The Air HQ prepares a thorough projection of the capability an aircraft is required to have. It is important to understand that all platforms will meet the requirements. It is a complex question and has an equally complex answer. Once the capability evaluation is done, they are put through stringent tests. There are teams sitting in Air HQ going bonkers since last one and half years and the evaluation is going to be foolproof in technical operational terms. The key point is going to be smooth transfer of the technical knowhow. This is going to clinch the deal.

What is your assessment?

I will like to talk as a strategic thinker and would settle for the company which would like to settle as a technology partner. But I would like to put on record that India should not put all its eggs in one basket. And also, it is not right for India to be dependent on one nation for 60 to 70 per cent of its defence requirements. You know which country I am talking about, it’s Russia. No matter how robust our relations are, it’s not strategically advisable. Technologically, the American aircraft is a true AESA technology platforms, others are derived from it. This programme is very important. We should not see it a contract of 10 billion dollars or in the terms of double engine or single engine power. It’s going to shape future technology. At the end of the day, what do we get? What’s the political gain? If I get your aircraft, what do I gain? May be we will get a better position in Afghanistan, who knows? I don’t know. After all, the policies of many countries have changed with such prospects. So we have to leverage this buying power to our positive gain in other areas.

From a no-cost hospital to a super-specialty medical facility for the poor – retrenched workers of a sick steel company in West Bengal have masterminded the impossible, writes Chandrasekhar Bhattacharjee

It is a low-cost hospital where humanity breathes in all its glory. At the helm of affairs are a bunch of workers who lost their jobs when the sick Indo Japan Steel Company in Belur, West Bengal, downed its shutters for good.

Swami Vivekananda’s famed Belur Math is just a few meters away and those who run the Shramajeevi Hospital are clearly inspired by the great man’s words: “Who serves people serves God”.

The Shramajeevi Hospital has had a deep impact. Ask truck driver Umashankar. He was in danger of losing both his legs after a speeding car hit him in Durgapur in the early 1990s. At the NRS Hospital in Kolkata he was told that his legs, which had six cracks, would have to be amputated. But in Shramajeevi he was treated for two months and his legs were back to normal. His total bill was Rs 8,000. Umashankar is back at the wheels.

Mohammad Mehyor, 14, had his oesophagus severely damaged after he consumed hazardous acid while working in a factory. Wheeled into the hospital a few days later, his life was in danger. Doctors replaced his oesophagus with a piece of his large intestine. He is 21 today and leading a normal life.

A bypass surgery at this hospital costs no more than Rs 25,000 while private hospitals in Kolkata and elsewhere charge at least Rs 1 lakh. “The heart operation unit started about four years back and has already performed 300 bypass surgeries. At least 20 of these operations have been done completely free of cost,” said Dr Anil Saha, secretary of the Belur Shramajeevi Swasthya Prakalpa Samiti.

he Samiti now plans to build a 500-bed super-speciality hospital at Belu Milki village near Singur to serve lakhs of poor and working people. The new project is being envisaged as something more than just a hospital.

In the process of building the existing hospital, the workers were led by the sole union. It had no political affiliation. In the early 1980s, the secondary steel factory was in the throes of a crisis and went through a cycle of closures and re-openings. “Our neighbours helped us a lot during that period. But once the factory reopened, we would forget their good deeds, said Phani Gopal Bhattacharjee, the mentor of the hospital.

It was to repay the kindness of the neighbours that the workers of the factory came up with the idea of a free weekly medical check-up for the poor. The exercise began in 1982 in a Hindi primary school. “We soon expanded the scope of the operation to include eye surgery camps and minor surgeries,” said Bhattacharjee.

Junior doctors, who were agitating at that point against the authorities not for better wages but improved medical services in government hospitals, stepped forward to help the workers realise their dream of providing affordable healthcare to the poor.
